INDIAN PARKS
India's forest cover is 20% of its total land area. However, total area for wildlife management is around 170,000 sq km. Of this, 80,000 sq km has been allocated to Tiger reserves under the Project Tiger initiative. The Tiger Reserves or TR's are spread out as below;
Central India & Eastern Ghats: 24 TR's
The major ones are Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench (MP & Maharashtra), Ranthambore, Tadoba-Andhari, Melghat, Satpura, Nagarjunsagar Srisailam and Panna.
North-east India & Brahmaputra: 9 TR's
The major ones are Kaziranga, Manas, Orang and Namdapha.
Shivalik-Gangetic Plains: 5 TR's
They are Corbett, Dudhwa, Pilibhit, Rajaji and Valmiki.
Sundarbans: 1 TR
These are the man-eating mangrove tigers of India and must be observed by boat.
Western Ghats: 11 TR's
The major ones are Nagarhole, Bandipur, Mudumalai, Sathyamangalam, Biligiri Ranganatha and Bhadra.
